Local Sports - Golf in Cornwall and S, D and G is about to get a little more interesting.

For the first time ever, local golfers of all skill levels will be able to compete in a public golf tour this season as part of the newly-formed Cornwall chapter of the Mulligan Tour.

The first tournament of the 2007 tour is slated for the April 28 weekend in Malone, N.Y., and a minimum of eight to 10 events will follow, with formats ranging from a Ryder Cup-style team event to singles events. There will also be a mid-season two-day major and an end of year two-day tour championship.

Members of the tour will have their handicap measured and used for each of the selected individual events.

Brian Bonnar, the owner of the Cornwall tour chapter, said the sporting event will break new ground by providing a fun and competitive venue for local golfers.

"It's a fantastic way to meet new people and enjoy the game most of us love but have trouble playing," joked Bonnar.

Bonnar said he's hoping to have 40 to 50 golfers sign up for the tour's inaugural season. Men, women and seniors are all welcome to register, he added.

Started in 1996, the Mulligan Tour has grown from 20 members competing in Ottawa to more than 500 members competing in chapters in Montreal, Ottawa, Kingston, Toronto, Hamilton, London, Windsor and Cornwall. The tour also has a footing in several U.S. cities, including Cleveland, Charlotte and Seattle.

Brian Leakey, the president of the Mulligan Tour, said the tour caters to golfers of all skill levels. The average age of members is 40, and handicaps range from 0 to 36, with the average being 16.

Memberships for the 2007 Mulligan Tour in the Cornwall region are now available for $49 before May 15, and $59 after that date.

More info on the tour is available at www.mulligantour.com or by contacting Bonnar at 613-936-2036.
